To commemorate the launch of White Flare and Black Bolt today, we scraped Reddit to find the top 25 “best” Pokémon from Gen 5. For a set that is basically fan service built around a generation of “pocket monsters” that aren’t as popular? We figured we would pull together a list with images so you know what cards might be fun to chase.

In the context of Pokémon cards, a “swirl” refers to a visual pattern in the holographic foil, usually on Holo Rare cards from older sets. Makes sense, right? What doesn’t make as much sense are the unwritten rules for dealing with swirls.

These three sets are commonly referred to as the “e-Reader sets” in English TCG circles. They are notable for their wide borders (to accommodate the dot codes) and uniquely stylized artwork. But where did they come from? And what was used to “read” them?
